Historique :	Cette oeuvre est une des pièces intéressantes de l'église de Gouvernes et participe à son histoire. Ce tableau est représentatif de la peinture religieuse du 19e siècle, où triomphe l'éclectisme, une certaine monumentalité et hiératisme, et un souci de la précision et du décor archéologique. Envoi de l'Etat à la commune de Gouvernes qui en avait fait la demande, en 1845 : il s'agit d'un original.
