Historique :	Il s'agit d'une réduction de la statue équestre de Louis XIV réalisée en 1699 par Girardon pour la place Vendôme à Paris et détruite à la Révolution. Elle est montée sur un socle en bois décoré de cariatides et de cartouches, réalisé par le sculpteur Slodtz. D'autres exemplaires sont conservés au Musée du Louvre et au Musée de l'Ile de France à Sceaux. La réduction et le socle de Vaux-le-Vicomte passent pour avoir été l'exemplaire que le sculpteur Girardon conserva sa vie durant dans sa galerie de sculpture au Louvre. Elle provient de la collection Scott (1914).
